Practical calcium supply: Experiences from Hof Vogelsang

The family-run farm Hof Vogelsang in East Westphalia has been in existence since 1890 and is now managed by Anne and Stefan Vogelsang. Together with family and team, they farm around 180 hectares of agricultural land and keep 180 dairy cows as well as sows and fattening pigs.

What makes the farm special: Stefan and Anne Vogelsang embody modern agriculture through continuous development. They question routines, test new approaches in the barn and share their experiences openly, including on social media. Animal health, transparency and practical solutions are their focus.

Focus on the time around calving

A key issue on the farm is animal health and, therefore, also the calcium supply of dairy cows around calving. This sensitive phase determines how well the animals start lactation. Feeding appetite, energy intake and metabolic stability play a decisive role here.

Stefan Vogelsang has been using the PerformaNat CalciumBolus for around six months, with noticeable effects in the barn.

"I've had really good experiences - for two reasons," explains Vogelsang.

"Firstly, a phytogenic active ingredient ensures that calcium can be better absorbed in the rumen. Secondly, the bolus relies on calcium formate, a rumen-friendly source of calcium that is much gentler than conventional calcium chloride. We see significantly greater appetite, feed intake, and therefore energy intake. The animals simply put on weight better after birth."

Fewer problems, fewer interventions

Changes can also be seen in animal health. In combination with the SmaXtec calving alarm, calcium supplementation can begin the day before calving. This is when colostrum production begins and the need for calcium increases dramatically. Immediately after birth, at 12-24 hours and the following day, the cows receive further CalciumBoluses. This enables Stefan Vogelsang to provide his cows individually with calcium and ensure they are optimally supplied when they need it most.

Since then, we have had significantly fewer milk fever problems and also less use of medication.

The cows enter lactation faster, appear more stable and show an overall calmer behaviour after calving.

Practical solutions that work in everyday life

For Stefan Vogelsang, the use of the PerformaNat CalciumBolus is not an isolated experiment, but an important contribution to everyday farm life:

Solutions have to work in everyday life, bring measurable benefits and improve animal welfare.

The experience of the Vogelsang farm shows how a well-thought-out calcium supply can help to alleviate critical phases in dairy farming in a targeted manner. Practical, animal-friendly and economically viable.
